NJ Jury: Kia Must Pay Car Owners $6M (Business Week)
June 10, 2008

The Associated Press June 10, 2008

A state Superior Court jury in Elizabeth says a U.S. unit of Kia Motors Corporation owes $6 million to owners of Kia Sephia sedans.

Lawyers for the plaintiffs claimed the cars, bought in New Jersey from 1997 to 2000, had defective brake systems.

The lawyers say more than 8,000 car owners ran up large auto repair bills because their brake pads and rotors wore down prematurely and the vehicle warranty failed to cover the costs.

Each car owner would get $750 under the jury verdict, handed down Friday.

Irvine, California-based Kia Motors America said in a statement that the jury was wrong to rule that it failed to honor its warranties. The company plans to appeal the ruling.
