CIVIL RIGHTS  Civil Rights Law is the area of law protecting those rights guaranteed by the Bill of Rights and the 13th and 14th Amendments to the Constitution, including the right to due process and equal treatment under the law of all people regarding enjoyment of life, liberty, property, and protection.
A civil right is an enforceable right or privilege, which if interfered with by another gives rise to an action for injury. Examples of civil rights are freedom of speech, press, and assembly, the right to vote, freedom from involuntary servitude, and the right to equality in public places. Discrimination occurs when an individual’s civil rights are denied or interfered with because of their membership in a particular group or class. Statutes have been enacted to prevent discrimination based on a person’s race, sex, religion, age, previous condition of servitude, physical limitation, national origin, and in some instances, sexual preference.
The violation of an individual’s civil rights can and does happen. This can include employment discrimination, police discrimination such as wrongful arrest, the discrimination of inmates in prison, and other violations.
Intolerance on the basis of race, color, national origin, ancestry, gender, religion, age, marital status, or sexual orientation can be the basis for filing a civil rights suit; so can disability discrimination, job discrimination, sexual harassment, “glass ceiling” roadblocks, or pregnancy discrimination.
