Confidential $2.75 Million Recovery for Woman with Permanent Gastrointestinal Injury

The injured plaintiff, a 32-year-old professional woman, underwent what was to be straightforward laparoscopic surgery to remove a diseased portion of her colon and to create a temporary colostomy intended to permit other portions of her diseased colon to rest and heal from the damaging effects of longstanding Crohn’s disease.

Lawyer Roberta D. Pichini represented the plaintiff throughout and contended that a surgical error during the procedure, coupled with the negligent failure of the surgical team to recognize the error for a number of days, resulted in the destruction of most of the plaintiff’s colon, with irreparable consequences to her. The case was vigorously defended throughout. It settled at mediation after the depositions of multiple parties involved had been taken and discovery had been completed.

At the insistence of the defendants, the identity of the parties, the precise nature of the surgical error, and the jurisdiction are being kept confidential
